The English-taught course Human Rights and EU Private International Law at University of Milan will officially start on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, offering students a distinctive opportunity to explore the intersection between EU private international law and fundamental rights protection.
Hosted by the Faculty of Law and running until the end of May 2026, the course is open to Law students of the University with a basic knowledge of International Law, as well as to visiting Erasmus students. Entirely delivered in English, the programme combines rigorous academic foundations with a strong practical dimension.

Worth 6 ECTS and comprising 42 hours of teaching, the course offers a comprehensive and structured overview of the European Union system of private international law (PIL).
The first part will be devoted to the core mechanisms governing cross-border legal relations within the EU, including jurisdiction, applicable law, and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and family law matters. Particular attention will be paid to areas where EU legislation remains incomplete, such as personal status, marriage validity, and filiation.
The second part will adopt a seminar-based approach. Students will be invited to actively discuss some of the most significant and recent cases, engaging critically with the complex interaction between EU private international law and fundamental rights. Through guided class discussion, participants will reflect on issues such as access to justice, discrimination arising from the application of foreign law, and the human-rights implications of recognising or refusing cross-border judgments.
